varvning

Does anybody happen to know what "varvning(en)" means whet talking about orienteering. I guess it has something to do with some part of the distance or likewise, but still don't quite get it.
Thank you for any help.

i guess it's smth like "going around"
thanks, that's what I was thinking about, but the question remains - going around what? Since they are not running at a stadium and there are no laps there...
going around the same place agian and again?
I'm not much of any help really - I'm a native speaker of Swedish and I've never heard that word being used in that context, ever. O.O

'Varvningen' makes it sound like they're running the same lapse more than once, but I don't think you do that in orienteering so I have no idea o___O
It looks like they sometimes return to one and the same place (probably the one where the stands and spectators are) to do something there, but I am not quite sure about this and do need more detail and someone's good advice.
thank you

A runner or driver has lapped a competitor if s/he leads by a whole lap.
thanks! all that makes a lot of sense. the trouble is they don't have any laps in orienteering, which confuses me a lot
It means that one competitor has outstripped another with a whole lap. The noun ("varvningen") is rather uncommon. You hear the verb "att varva" more often in sport contexts. :-)

well, there are orienteering disciplines with laps. do you have the whole sentence/context. would be easier then. :-)
Not knowing too much about orienteering I did some research and this is what I came up with.

They do have laps in orienteering, It's really the only chance to make it a bit of a spectator sport. In relay races it's also where they will hand over the baton.

The "grandstand" area where you start and finish the race is also called varvningen.

Here's a few quotes I found. (Don't think I'm allowed to link in a post.)
